If you are pregnant and have a Bartholin gland cyst, you may not need any treatment as most of these go away by themselves. But if you having problems or symptoms that can lead to infection your doctor will need to treat you and the treatment option will depend on how bad the symptoms that you experience are.

If you have a cyst without any symptoms or mild symptoms, treatment may include:

• Watching the cyst

• Soaking the genital area in a warm bath

• If you are experiencing pain, an over the counter pain medication, ibuprofen or acetaminophen (if you are pregnant check with your doctor before taking any medication, prescription or nonprescription)

You can have a cyst for months and even years with every experiencing any symptoms. In the event that the cyst becomes infected and ruptures, you may need to see your doctor, in most cases it will heal on its own. But you may experience some pain that an over-the-counter pain reliever will take care of. You may also need to take antibiotics.

If you have a large cyst that is painful and infected, your doctor will want to drain it. You need to take antibiotics before hand if it's abscessed. Draining the cyst will not be enough, it will just fill up again, in order to prevent this, the cyst will be held open for a few weeks with a small tube that has a balloon on one end. The balloon will be inflated once the tube is placed inside the cyst so that it can drain and heal. Once the glad has healed, the tube and balloon will be removed.

Your doctor may also choose to use a laser to treat your cysts. Bartholin cyst treatment can be done with a local anesthetic right in your doctor's office, but if you are in a lot of pain or discomfort, you may want to have your cyst surgically removed under general anesthesia.

Your entire Bartholin gland and duct may need to be removed in severe cases where the abscesses refuse to heal. This will require surgery.

Treatment during pregnancy

• If it all possible the draining of the cyst will be postponed until the birth of your baby to prevent excessive bleeding.

• If the cyst becomes infected it could cause to go into labor so it will need to be drained and you'll have to take an antibiotic.
