Clomid Introduction

Clomid is used to induce regular ovulation. If you are having problems conceiving, and have irregular ovulation and/or no ovulation then clomid can help you.

Reasons for Irregular or No Ovulation

• When you are born, you come equipped with all the eggs that your body will ever have and one is usually ovulated during each monthly menstrual cycle. As you age, infertility increases as your ovarian function begins to decline until menopause, then no more eggs are released and FSH levels are very high. Ovarian failure means that the ovaries cannot produce eggs that will normally fertilize and develop. Ovarian failure may occur early in some women.

• Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common condition where you have numerous cysts on your ovaries.

• Thyroid dysfunction- Abnormally high or low levels of thyroid hormone can cause irregular ovulation thought to be due to the high levels of estrogen associated with these conditions.

• Hyperprolactinemia - Prolactin is responsible for breast milk production in pregnant women. Elevated levels of the hormone, prolactin, can lead to problems with ovulation and infertility.

• Excessive exercise, stress, and anorexia can lead to irregular ovulation.

• Adrenal dysfunction- Androgens are produced by the adrenal glands and abnormally elevated levels lead to oligoovulation. Increased androgens are associated with elevated levels of prolactin, and/or tumors on the ovary, pituitary, or adrenal gland.

• Sometimes eggs will not fertilize and develop into health embryos for unexplained reasons.

If you don't ovulate regularly which is called anovulation, clomid can induce ovulation in up to 85% of women. Of that 85%, roughly half of those will become pregnant. If you haven't become pregnant after you've been on Clomid for six months, then you will be moving onto other fertility drugs.
