People With a Love For Geometry- Land Surveyors

Author: Melissa Peterman

Do you love maps, math and new technology? If you have an eye for a good line and like solving problems than you may be a great candidate for a land surveyor.

What’s exciting about going into the land surveying field is all the new technology that is available to you. Getting a degree in land surveying also means getting a degree in technology in some ways. Land surveyors need to be current with emerging technologies such as GPS (Global Positioning System) and 3D laser scanning and digital photography. GPS is used for precise positioning of points anywhere on the earth that are used in a wide variety of mapping procedures. Land surveyors, in general need to be able to measure and map the earth's surface through the use of current technologies and software. If you are into math, geography and technology, look to becoming a land surveyor!

High school, college students and people looking to change careers should take classes in algebra, geometry, drafting, CAD or computer aided drafting, computer science and geography. Other helpful classes include astrology, geology, forestry, business and even astronomy.

To get started, many property surveying companies offer summer internships. During your internship, you will be able to go out with a work crew and not just gain hands on experience, you will be able to ask pertinent information from professional land surveyors. It is advised to volunteer or take on an apprenticeship/internship over a summer to make sure that property surveying is the right job for you.

Because property surveying is a specialized profession, there is job security in most cities. Land surveyors will often work for the government and private sector. Builders and contractors rely on property surveys for urban development and planned communities like shopping malls, schools and even highways and roads. Other areas needed land surveyors:

• Architecture

• Construction- housing and roads

• Disaster and emergency planning

• Anyone wanting to build on their property, (like a pool or adding onto their home) will need to know their property line

Being a land surveyor doesn’t mean you are constantly out in the field. It often entails computer work, mapping, drawing, taking images and analyzing them. It’s likely you will need solid writing skills, as you will be writing up reports, estimates and invoices. It is also a business and like any business, you have to be profitable in order to survive. Learning good business practices and customer service is hugely important.

Who becomes a land surveyor and is it a good career? Those may be the questions you ask yourself when thinking about your career path. You know those men and women in the fluorescent vests, surrounded by construction cones looking through what appears to be an old style camera? Those could soon be your people!
