Schnoodles are a cross between a Schnauzer and a Poodle. As with some other designer dogs, the Schnoodle was developed to be a hypoallergenic dog. Of course, no dogs are completely hypoallergenic since they all have hair follicles and can release dander, but Poodles do shed less than many breeds. Breeders often try to cross other breeds with Poodles in the hope of creating a dog that will shed much less. Schnoodles may shed less than their Schnauzer parent so they can be a good choice for people who like dogs with the Schnauzer personality.

Puppies may develop the wire coat of the Schnauzer, the soft, curly coat of the Poodle, or a wavy coat. Dogs can also combine coat type on their bodies. Coat colors can include black, white, brown, gray and apricot. Dogs can also be multicolored.

Schnoodles are typically intelligent and devoted. Poodles are one of the most intelligent breeds of dogs and very trainable. Schnauzers are extremely devoted to their families. If you are interested in a Schnoodle please keep in mind that no two dogs will be alike. Your puppy may inherit more qualities from his Schnauzer parent than his Poodle parent, or vice versa. You should be certain that you like both breeds and that they suit your lifestyle since your puppy may grow up to be very much like either breed. Your Schnoodle may have the temperament of the Poodle, or he may be more like the Schnauzer. You probably won’t get a dog that really blends the two breeds.

In talking to your breeder be sure to ask what health testing they have done on the parents. In particular, ask about hip dysplasia and Progressive retinal atrophy. These conditions sometimes plague Poodles and can be passed on to their offspring.

Schnoodles may require a little special grooming because of their coats. Schnauzers typically require professional grooming because they have a hard, wiry coat and many Schnoodle offspring will inherit a similar coat. Frequent brushing and a clip every few weeks will help them to stay in good shape. These dogs may also grow some ear hair that needs plucking or trimming. Your groomer should be able to take care of this for you or you can learn to manage it yourself.

Schnoodles are becoming very popular, especially with some celebrities. That puts them at risk for over breeding. People may breed them quickly just to make money without taking the time to evaluate the parents or do adequate health testing. Do your homework before you buy any puppy and make sure you find a good breeder.
