There are numerous methods of removing varicose veins . The treatment depends on the degree of the varicose veins, location, experience of the physician and the availability of the techniques. The standard methods of varicose vein removal include:
EVLT : Endovenous laser therapy is a newer method of removing varicose veins . The technique utilizes ultrasound to guide a laser probe in the varicose vein. The laser is the fired and destroys the vein. EVLT only treats varicose veins in the thigh area. When done well, it is a good technique. Side effects include skin burns and mild pain.
Stripping: this old method is still useful in the treatment of varicose veins. The entire vein is stripped under general anesthesia. The procedure is useful for individuals who have very large varicose veins which extend all the way from the ankle to the groin. When varicose veins are left alone they progress and stripping may be the best alternative in such cases.
Closure: This is very similar to EVLT but utilizes a radiofrequency probe to heat the vein. It is also a good technique to treat varicose veins.
Stabs:. Some individuals only have isolated clusters of varicosities in the leg. These small bulges of vein can be removed by small incisions. The procedure does require some type of anesthesia. It does leave multiple marks on the leg which may turn dark with time.
